Other than being an old, very good friend, as well as, a member of our Flock, Beth Pollak is an inspiration to all who dream of chasing a vision.
As a veteran of the fashion industry, Beth’s expertise lies in public relations and editorial. She’s worked with contemporary designers ranging from Tibi to Rebecca Taylor and served as an editor at Lucky Magazine for five years. But after a move to London, where she had her daughter, she decided to launch Livotte, a collection of comfortable yet chic basics that we want to wear all day, everyday.
We admire anyone who switches gears and pulls it off in such an awesome way, especially while taking the time to play Mama too. Beth does it with grace and wit. We sat down with Beth to talk Livotte, daughter Livvy and her latest venture in bringing the women of London together -
Can you describe your journey in developing Livotte?
The journey was long and treacherous at times, but my business partner Delphine and I were determined. It took nearly two years to source the right organic fabric and find a factory that understood us and our needs. But when we finally found both, it came together seamlessly and we feel very confident and proud of the end result.
THE HARD WORK SHOWS! THE COLLECTION LOOKS AMAZING. HOW DO YOU BALANCE IT ALL - STARTING A NEW BUSINESS AND BEING A MOM?
Every morning I get up and develop a clear idea of what I need to get done for the business while Livvy is at school. I do my best to focus and try not to get distracted, but things do come up and sometimes I am with Livvy and taking a work call at the same time. It’s just how things are and I try not to feel guilty about it. I set aside an afternoon each week for Livvy and I to do a special mother/daughter activity that includes going to the theatre, a museum or even baking a healthy treat.
LOVE THAT! AND CAN YOU TELL US, WHAT IS YOUR "THERAPY?”
I love to run in the park, no matter the weather. Being alone outside gives my mind time to wonder. I also love Barrecore and use it as a time to focus on being good to myself and allowing my mind and body to become more centered.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE FAMILY RITUAL?
My husband and I both grew up in families that sat around the dinner table together so we do that with Livvy nearly every night. We also started introducing Shabbat on Friday evenings and she loves to light the candles with me and sing songs.
That’s so sweet! OK, Fun question. What's your spirit animal?
I’m a lioness. I am soft and quite quiet on the outside but definitely fierce and determined on the inside and very protective over my young.
What's the last book you read with Livvy?
We read every night before bed and The Tiger That Came To Tea is the one book that she never gets tired of.
Cyndi Lauper or Madonna?
Madonna although Livvy prefers Cyndi Lauper.
WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS FOR LIVOTTE?
We are developing the collection that will drop in May/June and our aim is to build organically on what is working. There will also be a PR/marketing push in 2017 as the last few months was more of a test period. We are always doing events to learn and gain feedback from our customers and will continue to do that but are ready to expand beyond our network.
DO YOU HAVE ANY REGRETS?
I can say that perhaps I should have explored a career in design following my time studying at FIT. I studied tailoring and was burnt out and immediately went into PR and editorial following graduation. But the truth is that without the path that I took - working in PR, editorial and wholesale - I would not have the the skill set nor the guts to start Livotte. I don’t believe in regrets, I believe that if you want to do something or have an idea then figure out a way to make it happen.
THAT’S SUCH A GREAT OUTLOOK. LASTLY, WHAT MAKES YOU FLY?
Creating. I love seeing people wearing Livotte and knowing that we are making something that is amazing quality, ethically produced and that we are able to work locally with wonderful people in the London fashion community.
